In films there are certain conventions that are followed depending on genre. We discussed some of these conventions and found that vampire films usually have conventions such as the characters having pale skin, fangs, capes and should usually involve isolation in forests or castles with coffins and mysterious beings. The typical thought of vampires is that they suck blood to live and they dislike garlic. They usually have eternal life and are a powerful being in a patriarchal story where the male vampire preys on the female. A lot of films that follow the conventions can be found that the male vampire falls in love with a female human however in the Byzantium trailer the typical conventions were challenged as the vampire is a young girl who falls in love with a male. The fangs have been changed to sharp nails and the opening of the trailer does not seem to look like a typical vampire film however it has the dark lighting and the isolation of the beach. The beach is light and

What is culture?
I believe culture is all around us everyday. For me an important part of culture is music but my whole culture is made up by things such as the clothes I wear and my background. I also believe culture is taught to me through my parents and what they do in their lives as they have an impact on me and my life.

Communication and Culture AS- High and Popular Cultures
This week in Communication and Culture I have learnt about different types of people who have thoughts upon cultures. One person we have learnt about is Matthew Arnold who is a 19th century writer and critic. He is famous for his series of essaysn called 'Culture and Anarchy'. He believes that culture is 'The best that is thought and said in the world'. He believed that people should be educated to have a taste in high culture which will prevent anarchy. He also believes that the arts makes you a better person.
High culture includes things such as Operas, Arts and people such as Shakespeare. We also learnt about F.R. Leavis and Storey.
This week we also learnt about Popular Culture and discussed things such as mass communication (T.V, Radio, Computers, Internet, Email etc). Subcultures are people who are outside of mainstream culture such as people like Emos, Goths, Punks).
Popular cultures includes things such as supporting a football team and then having their scarfs and attending their matches. Watching certain television programmes and listening to chart music is also a type of popular culture. Films, clothing and books can also be included under this culture depending on the types for example Converse are a popular clothing and therefore is a popular culture. I spoke about things I do within a popular culture which includes watching some reality television programmes such as The Call Centre and I skate too which is a cultural activity. Although they are 'popular' things to do, there are negatives to the popular culture groups such as they can be addictive and if you do not follow the norm of a popular culture then you can be rejected and are not accepted in society.

Communication and Culture AS
So far in Communication and Culture I have learnt about different
types of key words within the subject such as Communication (interacting
with someone) Culture (social behaviour within different types of
social groups), Representation (the way something is presented), Value
(the importance of something), Identity (who or what somebody is) and
Power (being in a stronger position than someone else). We also learnt
briefly about some other terms such as Idiolect, Sociolect, Dialect and
Accent. After learning about these, I had to use the terms to write an
essay about myself.
Also, We learnt about the process approach where we learned about the sender, message and receiver of communication which can come from something as little as an alarm clock to you telling you to wake up, to a face to face conversation with a friend. For an example of this you could say that an advert on a bus would be Company (sender) > Advert of the product (message)> Martha (receiver). The advert would be classed as Non-Verbal as it was written and therefore isn't a verbal communication.
